How to Activate WhatsApp Voice Calling Feature in Android

WhatsApp's voice calling feature is now available to all Android users. The world's most popular messaging app with over 700 million monthly active users only introduced this feature recently and rolled it out gradually to its Android users. If you are not an Android user, you'll just have to wait a little longer to get this feature. But if you use Android, and haven't yet activated voice calling on WhatsApp, what are you waiting for?

The process isn't as simple as updating WhatsApp to start using the voice calling features. It involves a couple more steps that you need to follow.

Activate WhatsApp Calling Feature

1. Download the latest version of WhatsApp for Android from here. The latest version on WhatsApp's website is 2.12.7, but if you're downloading from Google Play, ensure that your device has version 2.11.561. Older versions don't support this feature for all users.

2. Once you have the latest version of WhatsApp installed on your Android phone, ask someone who has WhatsApp calling enabled to make a WhatsApp call to your number.

3.Multiple users have reported that giving a missed call doesn't work. You'll have to receive the call and wait for a few seconds before disconnecting to activate WhatsApp voice calling.

4.When the feature is enabled on your smartphone, you'll see a new three-tab layout on WhatsApp, one each for Calls, Chats and Contacts.

What does it cost?

The service is free, and not charged by WhatsApp. Much like other apps like Skype and Viber offering VoIP, WhatsApp voice calling uses a data connection to place a call, whether over Wi-Fi or mobile data. This data use however can be chargeable, based on your Internet plan.

For users of unlimited broadband Internet plans, the only worry is if the voice calling feature will work properly on lower speeds once the FUP limit is exhausted. Similarly, users of 2G and 3G data plans who exhaust their allocated data will have to after that point pay per KB used, which can go up to as high as Rs. 0.10 per 10KB on 2G and Rs. 0.04 per 10KB on 3G.

Precautions :

A few days back, this scam was tracked and the link was pulled down. However, another similar link is being circulated now, which also has come across as a hoax.

Therefore, if you receive an invite from a link that reads ‘Hey, I am inviting you to try whatsapp Calling click here to activate now—>

http://www.whatsappvoiceplus.com’, do not click on the link.

Clicking on the link will take you to a page that will force you to invite 10 friends to enable the feature, which will ask your friends to further invite 10 of their friends.

Essentially, the scammers make their money by forcing you to go through multiple pages, advertisements and websites, which will land you with no voice calling feature but a fat chance of attracting virus and malware into your device. So beware of such swindles and don’t let the scamsters win!
