VideoLAN (VLC) is probably the most popular video player due to its amazing ability to play almost any code you want. Most of the people use VLC for playing video and audio files only but you can download YouTube videos without using any website or software.

How to download YouTube videos using VLC

Find a video on YouTube like this and copy the URL from the address bar. Open VLC, go to Media > Open Network Stream (Ctrl + N) and paste the YouTube link in the box and click play.

Find Codec information (Ctrl + J) under Tools and copy the link from box says Location.

Go back to your browser and paste the link in the address bar. This will open the source file directly on YouTube's servers. Right click the video as it plays, select Save Video as, it will download the file in browser or download manager. 

Note : You can also record clips from YouTube videos as they're streaming in VLC by pressing the Red Record button in the player itself.
