Facebook Messenger comes to Desktop via Web Browser

WhatsApp had launched the desktop version of their service and users could access it from Chrome on desktop (only for Android phones) via the connected phone. Now, Facebook has rolled out the similar functionality for Facebook Messenger app which is available for iOS, Android and Windows Phones.

Previously if you had to use Facebook Messenger, you had to login to Facebook on desktop browser, but now a standalone service called Messenger is available.

You can simply login with your Facebook account and you will see all the conversations loaded. Similar to the version available on Facebook.com, the Messenger website also allows you to make calls (voice and video) from the browser. You can make free HD calls from Facebook using this service, you will be charged only for Wi-Fi or 3G connected. You can also share photos using the service and add stickers to your conversations.

As of now Messenger is still available on Facebook.com unlike the company’s move to separate both apps on mobile platforms. In future, we could even see Messenger growing out as an independent platform for social networking.

How to disable in-app purchases on Android

In-app purchases tend to be a real nuisance for Android users which can lead to problems and issues. In this tutorial we’ll take you through this process which will hopefully help save you and your wallet.

Disable in-app purchases on Android

1. Open up the Google Play app from the app drawer on your device. Press on the menu icon located on the top right of the home page and select the Settings tab from the drop down menu that now appears in front of you.

2. Scroll down through the various settings until you reach the User Controls sub-menu. From within here you’ll want to find the Use PIN for purchases option. Currently this will be greyed out and you’ll need to select the Set or Change PIN option instead.

3. This screen will require you to create a unique PIN for your phone or tablet. There’s no restriction on the length of it, but make sure it’s easy enough for you to remember. After adding your new PIN, you’ll need to confirm it on the next screen.

4. You’ll now find that the Use PIN for purchases option is now available for you to select. By ticking this option any subsequent purchases you make on your device, including in-app purchases, will require you to first enter the PIN before confirming it.

5. After setting everything in place you’ll want to make sure it’s working properly. Open up an app that you know includes a range of in-app purchases. We used Temple Run 2 here. Find an in-app purchase and click on the Buy option.

How to Use Whatsapp on Desktop or Laptop

One of the limitations of WhatsApp is that you can only use it on your phone. If you are not carrying your phone, you're stuck without WhatsApp. Well, not anymore. WhatsApp has rolled out WhatsApp Web that lets you use WhatsApp inside a desktop browser.  Here are instructions on how to setup WhatsApp Web.  

You can now use the WhatsApp messenger on your Mac or Windows PC provided you have the WhatsApp app running on a mobile phone that is not an iPhone. 

Go to web.whatsapp.com on your desktop, scan the QR code on the screen with WhatsApp on your phone and you can instantly send or receive messages to any of your WhatsApp contacts from the computer.

WhatsApp supports desktop notifications in Google Chrome so you can read your messages even if the WhatsApp web app is open in some background tab. 

The other benefit is that you can send pictures from your desktop or the DSLR SD card without having to transfer the bulky file to your mobile. There’s no support for sending audio or video files though. 

The other limitation is that your mobile phone should be connected to the Internet for you to use WhatsApp on the web.

If you agree to share your location with the browser, it will send these details to Google Location Services for estimating your location which is then shared with the requesting website.

Turning off Geo Location

Turning off the location features in either browser is fairly easy.  

Mozilla Firefox : Go to the configuration settings by typing about:config in your browser window. Find the setting geo.enabled and double click it to set it to “false.”

Google Chrome : Go to Setting > Options > Advanced Setting > Content Setting > Location and click on Do not allow any site to track my physical location.

Internet Explorer : Go into Internet options -> Privacy. Select “Never allow websites to track your physical location.”

Opera : Go to Preference > Advanced > Network> Enable Geo location, Now cross it to Disable Geo location.

How to Fake your Geo-location Coordinates

The easiest browser to fake your location in is Firefox. In fact, there is a browser extension that does just that called Geolocater (sic). Download and install Geolocater and restart your browser. To configure it, you must go into the “Tools” menu, so right click at the top of your browser and enable the file menu to gain access to configuration. 

When you launch it, you must add a new location and include the name to save it. Search or browse to the location you wish to set, enter the name in the box on the right, and then click the button that looks like a kite with a check mark to save it.

Next time you go to a website that has Geo location enabled, you will be able to change which location you want to send to them and then “Share” to fake your location.

In Google Chrome, press Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows, or Cmd+Opt+I on Mac, to open the Chrome Developer Tools. Now press the Esc (escape) key to open the Console window. Switch to the Emulation tab and choose the Sensors option in the left sidebar.

Here check the setting that says “Emulate Geo location coordinates” and specify the exact latitude and longitude coordinates that you want to share with that website. 

Now refresh the current web page and it will take your fake location. Make sure that the developer tools panel is visible always else Chrome will not override your Geo location.

Even though location services have been disabled or faked, a great deal of information about where you are located is sent just by using the Internet. Your IP address can narrow your location down to your country and maybe even the city you are located in.
